Pico’s Nursery is a garden center and landscape contractor business located in the White Mountains of northeastern Arizona. It occupies about three acres in the town of Pinetop-Lakeside,
Arizona. On the property are a retail store, a greenhouse, a very large landscape office, and various sheds. There is considerable space for the display of plants, storage of extra inventory,
employee parking, and parking for landscape trucks and equipment. In addition to the areas devoted directly to the business, there is an owner’s residence, a guest house and a large garden.
Pico’s serves the White Mountains area of Arizona. It is an area not very well known outside of the state of Arizona, perhaps because it lacks any single well recognized city. Since it enjoys a clear and sunny mild spring, summer, and fall climate, it is a wonderful destination for people from the desert cities of Phoenix and Tucson. As the desert valley of Arizona grows, so does the population of its northern mountains.
The White Mountains is an area of considerable growth. It consists of the southern portions of Navajo and Apache counties of Arizona. The elevation averages about 7000 feet. The average snowfall
is approximately 50” per year. It comes as a surprise to many that there is skiing in Arizona.
Our marketing area extends about fifty miles in all directions from Pico’s location in Lakeside. The hub is the towns of Pinetop-Lakeside and Show Low. The further-out towns of Heber, Overgaard, Snowflake, Taylor, Springerville, Eagar, Greer, St. Johns, and Nutrioso also provide us with considerable business. We estimate that the population of the marketing area is about 90,000 people which then increases in the summer. Our designers/salespeople respond to requests for landscaping and generally draws a plan using computer assisted design drafting. The vast majority of our landscaping work is design/build. Our landscape designer and supervisor and foremen and our irrigation technician have attended seminars on irrigation, pond construction, and landscape lighting. Pico’s has been successful and will continue to be successful for the following reasons:
